We made a documentary about the human trafficking behind crypto scams: here’s a 2 minute look at our first screening at EthCC

Hi everyone!

I hope this is okay to share here. I’m part of the team behind Lights in Dark Rooms, a documentary about scam compounds in Southeast Asia, where many pig-butchering scams originate.

Our team travelled to Thailand and the Philippines to investigate and get the perspective of survivors, NGO leaders, security researchers, politicians, etc.

We held our first screening at EthCC in Cannes earlier this year, and recently put together this short video from the event.

We think this is especially important for the crypto community to talk about. Crypto scams tend to be a lot more visible from the victim’s side. What many people don’t see is that scammers are often trafficking victims themselves, detained in compounds and forced to do this under threats and abuse.

We’re now trying to get the documentary in front of more people and organize more awareness screenings and discussions. We have a series of interviews with scam compound experts and survivors coming out soon too.

We’d really appreciate you taking a look and sharing it with anyone who might be interested. It’s obviously a very complicated problem without an easy solution, but the crypto and broader tech community is one of the places where solutions can start.
