BTCPay Server urged operators to shut down their servers after receiving reports of unauthorized attackers draining funds from hot wallets.
Update (Nov. 3, 2026, 7:00 am UTC): This article has been updated to include comments from a BTCPay Server spokesperson and additional information from the project’s official security advisory.
Attackers have stolen Bitcoin and Litecoin from users running outdated BTCPay Server software, exploiting a security flaw the project fixed in August.
The Bitcoin payment platform said Monday that the thefts affected versions 2.4.1 and earlier. Users who installed the Aug. 7 fix before Sunday appeared unaffected, the project said.
